Purchasing the right single trip holiday insurance policy
Buying single trip holiday insurance used to be a difficult task. Are you planning that once in a lifetime vacation trip to an exotic location where you plan on trying every exotic sport available for you at the resort of your choice? Many holiday travel insurance policies are available via the Internet and you can even compare prices right on your home computer. Most people in the current economic environment will not be making multiple trips within a year’s time and as a result will not need annual cover. But if you are one of the lucky individuals or families that have escaped the global economic meltdown and are planning multiple trips then you will probably want to look at some sort of a policy to cover your investment.
While planning your holiday and the activities during your planned stay, you need to take into consideration what your destination offers in the way of medical facilities or how close your particular destination is to major medical facilities especially if you are planning on participating in any extreme sports that can greatly increase your chance of injury or even death.
If your holiday activities involve equipment of some sort to fully enjoy the activity, like skiing, long boarding (surfing), or snowboarding, most policies cover that equipment in the case of breakage or even theft. You need to keep in mind that theft to you is not the same to the insurance company. If you leave your skis, snowboard or long board outside while stopping at the bar for a drink (common practice) and they are stolen, your policy may not cover the loss because of your negligence. Please read the fine print when it comes to a situation like this before you purchase your single trip holiday insurance policy. In addition, you will also want to check as to whether the loss of your ski lift pass is covered. Some resorts have policies on these, especially if you have the receipt, but if you do not or it was included in your package, some policies will cover the cost of the pass but many others will only cover the cost in the case of injury of illness causing you to not be able to use the facilities.
Your policy should also cover you on a winter holiday in the event that lack of snow causes you to miss some days of winter activities. Some policies only cover a refund equal to the actual number of days you cannot participate in your planned activities up to a certain level, but not a refund of your entire trip. Make sure you are aware of exactly how this is worded prior to your departure. Some policies include the winter sports “rider” on all single trip holiday insurance policies. If so, and you are not planning on skiing, snowboarding or other winter sports while on holiday, you can ask to see if that “rider” can be removed and a discount applied in its place. Overall, it is best to compare prices to get the best possible deal.
